THE CEO'S NEW LOVER
CHAPTER ONE - Chaos Before Dinner
Maria O'Connor's eyes fluttered open, her head pounding from the wild bachelorette party the night before. As her vision cleared, she glanced at the clock and gasped in horror - it was already evening, and she was late for her own rehearsal dinner. Panic set in as she leapt out of bed, her bridesmaids nowhere to be seen.
"Oh, no, no, no!" Maria groaned, pressing her palms against her temples. She stumbled to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face and frantically brushing her teeth. Her reflection revealed smudged makeup and tangled hair.
"Shit," she cursed under her breath, realizing she had no time for a shower. She opted for dry shampoo and a messy bun, praying it would look intentional rather than desperate.
Racing around her apartment, Maria threw on the first presentable dress she could find - a navy blue cocktail number that thankfully didn't need ironing. She stumbled as she slipped on her heels, nearly twisting her ankle in the process.
"Damn it!" she hissed, catching herself on the edge of her dresser. Grabbing her purse, she realized her phone was dead. "Seriously? Of all days..."
She plugged it in for a quick charge while applying minimal makeup, cursing herself for oversleeping.
The moment her phone had enough battery, she called her maid of honor, Vicky Gale. Vicky answered, panic evident in her voice.
"Maria! Where are you? We've been trying to reach you for hours! Jared's been a nervous wreck, and the restaurant is getting impatient."
"I know, I know," Maria said, cringing. "I'm so, so sorry. I overslept, and I'm just walking out the door now. Can you please stall as long as you can? I'll be there as fast as I can."
"Hurry, Maria! We're all waiting for you," Vicky pleaded before hanging up.
Maria flew down the stairs of her apartment building, narrowly avoiding collision with an elderly neighbor.
"Excuse me, ma'am!" she called out, not slowing her pace.
She hailed a taxi, promising the driver an extra tip if he could get her to the restaurant in record time. As they wove through the Los Angeles traffic, Maria's mind raced with all the things that could go wrong.
"Come on, come on," she muttered, drumming her fingers anxiously on the car door.
They screeched to a halt outside the upscale restaurant, and Maria threw cash at the driver, sprinting inside. Her heels clicked against the pavement as she burst through the doors, out of breath and disheveled. All eyes turned to her.
At the head of the table, Jared Summers stood, his expression a mix of relief and anger. Maria approached him, whispering a hurried apology.
"I'm so sorry, Jared. I didn't mean to be late, I swear. The bachelorette party last night...I just overslept, and-"
Jared gritted his teeth, clearly upset but trying to maintain composure in front of their family and friends. "It's fine, Maria. Let's just...let's just sit down, okay?"
Maria nodded meekly, following Jared to their seats. She tried to smooth over the awkwardness with a self-deprecating joke.
"Well, I guess you can say I really took the 'beauty sleep' part of the rehearsal dinner too seriously, huh?" she chuckled nervously.
A few guests laughed politely, while others exchanged concerned glances. As the appetizers were served, Maria's phone buzzed. It was one of the wedding vendors with a last-minute question about tomorrow's arrangements.
"Excuse me," she said, rising from the table. "I need to take this."
Maria stepped outside, pacing back and forth on the sidewalk as she discussed flower arrangements and seating charts. When the call ended, she turned to head back inside, only to collide with a solid chest.
Looking up, her heart stopped. Standing before her was Myron Banks, her ex-boyfriend from college.
"Maria?" Myron said, his eyebrows raised in surprise.
"Myron," Maria breathed, her mouth going dry. She took in his familiar features - the strong jawline, the deep-set blue eyes, the thick dark hair styled professionally. He was even more handsome than she remembered.
"I...I didn't expect to see you here," she stammered, struggling to form coherent sentences.
Myron's lips curved into a smile, and a flicker of emotion crossed his face. "It's been a while, hasn't it? I'm just...surprised to run into you, that's all."
Maria felt a flood of memories wash over her - late-night study sessions, stolen kisses, the bittersweet ending of their relationship. She opened her mouth to speak, but the words caught in her throat.
"I, uh...I'm actually here for my rehearsal dinner," she finally managed. "I should probably get back inside. The guests are waiting for me."
Myron's eyebrows raised again, a hint of surprise in his voice. "Your rehearsal dinner? Wow, Maria, that's...that's great. Congratulations."
"Thank you," Maria said, her voice barely above a whisper. She hesitated, unsure of what else to say.
"Well, I won't keep you then," Myron said, taking a step back. "It was good seeing you, Maria. I hope you have a wonderful wedding."
"Thank you," Maria repeated, her heart pounding. She turned to head back inside, her mind reeling from the unexpected encounter.
As she approached the table, Jared caught her eye, his expression a mix of concern and irritation.
"Is everything okay?" he asked in a hushed tone.
Maria forced a smile, trying to regain her composure. "Yes, yes, everything's fine. Just a quick call with one of the vendors."
Jared nodded, though his brow was still furrowed. He gestured to the plates in front of them. "The food's getting cold. Come on, let's eat."
Maria took her seat, picking at her meal, her appetite all but gone. She could feel the weight of Jared's gaze on her, but she couldn't bring herself to meet his eyes. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions, replaying her chance encounter with Myron.
The rest of the dinner passed in a blur, with Maria making halfhearted attempts at conversation and Jared trying to keep the mood light. The other guests seemed to sense the tension, and the once lively chatter gradually faded into an uncomfortable silence.
As the main course was cleared, Jared stood, tapping his glass to gather everyone's attention.
"Thank you all for being here tonight to celebrate Maria and I," he began, his voice steady. "We're so grateful for your love and support as we embark on this new chapter of our lives."
Maria forced a smile, her gaze fixed on the table in front of her.
CHAPTER TWO - The Missing Groom
"As you all know, tomorrow is the big day," Jared continued. "And we couldn't be more excited to officially become husband and wife."
A smattering of applause filled the room, and Maria glanced up, trying to muster some enthusiasm.
Jared reached for her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "Maria, I know today hasn't been the smoothest, but I want you to know that I love you, and nothing is going to change that. Tomorrow is going to be the most perfect day, and I can't wait to make you my wife."
Maria's throat tightened, and she nodded, blinking back tears. "I love you too, Jared."
The guests erupted in applause, and Maria tried to focus on Jared's warm smile, pushing the memory of Myron to the back of her mind. But try as she might, she couldn't shake the uneasy feeling that had settled in the pit of her stomach.
After the dinner, Jared and Maria bid their farewells to their guests, thanking them for their attendance and support. As they walked to their car, Jared draped his arm around Maria's shoulders, pulling her close.
"I'm sorry today didn't go as planned," he murmured. "But I'm just glad you're here now, and that we're one step closer to our wedding."
Maria leaned into his embrace, forcing a smile. "Me too. I can't wait to marry you, Jared."
But even as the words left her lips, Maria couldn't help but wonder if she was truly ready to take this monumental step. The memory of Myron's face, the flicker of emotion in his eyes, haunted her, and she couldn't ignore the way her heart had skipped a beat at the sight of him.
As they drove home, Maria stared out the window, her mind a jumble of conflicting thoughts and emotions. She loved Jared, she truly did, but a part of her couldn't help but wonder if she was making the right decision. The future she had envisioned with him suddenly felt hazy and uncertain, and the weight of the commitment she was about to make weighed heavily on her.
When they arrived at their apartment, Jared turned to Maria, his brow furrowed with concern.
"Are you okay, sweetheart? You've been awfully quiet."
Maria forced a smile, squeezing his hand. "I'm fine, really. Just a little tired from the day, that's all."
Jared nodded, not entirely convinced, but he didn't press the matter further. "Okay, well, let's get you inside and into bed. You've had a long day."
As they made their way to the front door, Maria couldn't shake the nagging feeling that something was off. The encounter with Myron had left her unsettled, and she couldn't ignore the doubts that had begun to creep into her mind.
Once inside the apartment, Jared pulled Maria into a warm embrace, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"I love you, Maria," he murmured. "Tomorrow's going to be the best day of our lives, I just know it."
Maria wrapped her arms around him, resting her head against his chest. "I love you too, Jared."
But as she uttered the words, a part of her wondered if she was truly being honest with herself – or with him.
The rest of the evening passed in a haze, with Maria going through the motions of preparing for bed and trying to push the thoughts of Myron to the back of her mind. Jared, seemingly oblivious to her inner turmoil, chatted excitedly about the wedding plans, his enthusiasm only serving to amplify Maria's unease.
As they lay in bed, Maria stared up at the ceiling, her mind racing. She couldn't stop thinking about the way Myron had looked at her, the flicker of emotion that had crossed his face. It had been years since they had last seen each other, and yet the connection they had once shared still seemed to linger.
Maria sighed, turning to face Jared, who was already fast asleep. She watched the steady rise and fall of his chest, the familiarity of his features offering little comfort in the midst of her inner turmoil.
"What am I doing?" she whispered to herself,
The morning of Maria O'Connor's wedding dawned bright and clear. She woke early, a mix of excitement and nerves fluttering in her stomach. As she stretched and glanced at the clock, she couldn't help but smile - today was the day she would become Jared's wife.
A soft knock at the door pulled Maria from her thoughts, and she hurried to open it, greeted by the smiling faces of her bridesmaids.
"There's the blushing bride!" Vicky, her maid of honor, exclaimed, pulling Maria into a tight hug. "We've got mimosas and croissants, just the way you like."
Maria laughed, ushering her friends inside. "You ladies are the best. Come on in, make yourselves at home."
The apartment quickly filled with the lively chatter and laughter of the bridal party. Maria watched fondly as her bridesmaids bustled around, pouring champagne and comparing hairstyles.
"Alright, time to get this show on the road!" Vicky announced, clapping her hands. "Maria, your mom is on her way with the dress. Let's get you all dolled up, girl."
Maria felt a flutter of nerves in her stomach as she slipped into the stunning white gown, her mother's nimble fingers securing the intricate buttons along her spine.
"My baby girl," her mother murmured, blinking back tears. "You look absolutely breathtaking."
Maria turned to face the mirror, her heart swelling with a mix of pride and apprehension. "Do you really think so?"
Her mother nodded, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "Jared is going to be speechless when he sees you."
The thought of Jared brought a smile to Maria's face, and she allowed her bridesmaids to fuss over her hair and makeup, finally emerging from her bedroom fully transformed.
"Wow, Maria, you look incredible!" Vicky exclaimed, her eyes shining with excitement.
The other bridesmaids chimed in with similar sentiments, and Maria felt a surge of gratitude for her closest friends. As they sipped their mimosas and snapped photos, Maria couldn't help but feel a twinge of nervousness.
"I just can't believe this is really happening," she admitted, smoothing a hand over the intricate lace of her dress.
"Believe it, girl!" Vicky said with a wink. "You're about to become Mrs. Jared Summers."
Maria nodded, taking a deep breath. "I know, I know. It's just...it's all happening so fast, you know?"
Vicky placed a reassuring hand on her arm. "Hey, it's okay to be a little nervous. This is a big step, but you and Jared are meant to be. Today is going to be the best day of your life, I can feel it."
CHAPTER THREE - A Job Well Sought
Maria smiled, silently praying that Vicky was right. As the bridal party finished their final preparations, Maria's father arrived, his eyes shining with pride.
"There's my beautiful girl," he said, pulling Maria into a warm embrace. "Are you ready for this?"
Maria nodded, her throat tightening with emotion. "As ready as I'll ever be, Dad."
Her father squeezed her hand reassuringly. "I'm so proud of you, Maria. Jared is a lucky man."
The wedding coordinator poked her head into the room, a slight frown on her face. "Excuse me, Maria? They're ready for you out there."
Maria took a deep breath, smoothing her dress one last time. "Okay, let's do this."
As she and her father made their way to the church, Maria felt a flutter of excitement. This was it - the moment she had been dreaming of since she was a little girl. She could practically feel Jared's eyes on her as she approached the ornate wooden doors, her heart racing with anticipation.
But just as they were about to step through the threshold, the coordinator reappeared, her face pale.
"Mr. O'Connor, may I speak with you for a moment?" she whispered urgently.
Maria's father frowned, gently squeezing her hand. "Of course. Maria, darling, why don't you wait here for just a moment?"
Maria nodded, her brow furrowed with concern as she watched her father follow the coordinator. She could hear the muffled voices from the other side of the door, and her stomach twisted with unease.
After what felt like an eternity, her father returned, his expression grave.
"Dad? What's going on?" Maria asked, her voice trembling.
Her father sighed, placing a hand on her arm. "Maria, I'm so sorry, but...Jared is missing."
Maria felt as if the air had been knocked out of her. "What? What do you mean, he's missing?"
"The coordinator just informed me that Jared never showed up at the church," her father explained, his eyes filled with sympathy. "They've been trying to reach him, but there's been no answer."
Maria's mind raced, trying to process the information. "This...this can't be happening. He has to be here, he has to-"
"I know, sweetheart," her father interrupted, pulling her into a tight embrace. "But we're going to find him, I promise. We just need to stay calm and focused."
Maria clung to her father, her pristine white dress crumpling as she fought back tears. The sound of voices from the church poured through the doors, and Maria knew she couldn't hide in this small antechamber forever.
Squaring her shoulders, she took a deep breath and faced her father. "Okay. What do we do now?"
Her father's brow furrowed with concern. "Maria, are you sure you want to go out there? We can-"
"I need to know what's going on," Maria interrupted, her voice firm. "I can't just sit here and wait. Please, Dad, I have to do something."
Her father nodded, his expression resolute. "Alright, then. Let's go."
Together, they emerged from the antechamber, their entrance immediately drawing the attention of the confused and concerned guests. Maria scanned the crowd, her eyes desperately searching for any sign of Jared.
The wedding coordinator approached them, her face etched with worry. "Mr. and Mrs. O'Connor, I'm so sorry, but we've been unable to reach Jared. We've called his phone, his office, even his best friend, and no one has seen or heard from him."
Maria felt her heart sink, her fingers trembling as she gripped her father's arm. "What...what does this mean?"
The coordinator hesitated, her eyes filled with sympathy. "I'm afraid we have no choice but to postpone the ceremony until we can locate Jared. I know this is incredibly difficult, but-"
"No," Maria interrupted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can't just wait here. I have to find him."
Her father's brow furrowed with concern. "Maria, darling, I don't think that's a good idea. You shouldn't be out there on your own, especially in your wedding dress."
Maria shook her head, her gaze unwavering. "I don't care, Dad. I have to know what happened to him. I have to find him."
Without another word, she turned on her heel and strode towards the exit, her dress billowing behind her. Vicky and the other bridesmaids rushed to her side, their faces etched with worry.
"Maria, wait! Where are you going?" Vicky called out, struggling to keep up with her determined friend.
"I'm going to find Jared," Maria replied, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and resolve. "I can't just sit here and do nothing."
Vicky grabbed her arm, her brow furrowed with concern. "Maria, please, you can't go out there alone. Let us come with you, or at least let one of us drive you."
Maria shook her head, her eyes filled with a desperate determination. "No, Vicky. I need to do this myself. I'll be back as soon as I can, I promise."
Before anyone could protest, Maria hurried out the door, her father's car keys gripped tightly in her hand. She didn't know where she was going or what she would find, but she knew she couldn't just sit back and wait. Jared was out there somewhere, and she had to bring him home.
As Maria sped through the streets of Los Angeles, her pristine white dress billowing around her, she felt a surge of adrenaline coursing through her veins. Her mind raced with possibilities - had Jared been in an accident? Had something sinister happened to him? Or had he simply gotten cold feet and run away?
The uncertainty was agonizing, and Maria's heart pounded with each passing second. She tried Jared's phone again, but it went straight to voicemail. Gripping the steering wheel tightly, she made her first stop - Jared's house.
Pulling up to the familiar address, Maria leapt out of the car, her heels clicking against the pavement as she rushed to the front door. She pounded on the wood, calling Jared's name, but there was no answer.
"Jared? Jared, please, if you're in there, say something!" she cried, her voice tinged with desperation.
But the house remained silent, and Maria felt a lump forming in her throat. Grabbing the spare key she kept hidden under the mat, she let herself in, her wedding dress trailing behind her.
The house was eerily quiet, and Maria's heart sank as she realized it was empty. Jared's car was nowhere to be seen, and the kitchen counter was devoid of the usual clutter. It was as if he had simply vanished.
CHAPTER FOUR - Coffee and Old Memories
Feeling a surge of panic, Maria rushed upstairs, searching every room for any sign of her fiancé. But the house was perfectly in order, with no indication that Jared had ever been there.
Defeated, Maria returned to the living room, collapsing onto the couch. Tears streamed down her face as she buried her head in her hands, the weight of the day's events crashing down on her.
"Where are you, Jared?" she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.
Unwilling to give up, Maria pushed herself off the couch and headed for the door. She had to keep searching, had to find some clue as to where Jared might be. Stepping outside, she was met with a sea of curious neighbors, all drawn by the sight of a bride in distress.
"Ma'am, is everything alright?" one of the neighbors asked, his brow furrowed with concern.
Maria shook her head, her voice trembling. "No, everything is not alright. My fiancé is missing, and I have to find him."
The neighbor's eyes widened, and he immediately offered to help. Maria gratefully accepted, and soon a small group of people had joined the search, scouring the neighborhood for any sign of Jared.
Her first stop was Jared's favorite restaurant, a upscale Italian place they had frequented for years.
Bursting through the doors, Maria rushed to the hostess stand, her eyes wild with desperation.
"Excuse me, have you seen my fiancé, Jared Summers? He's tall, dark hair, blue eyes. Please, it's an emergency."
The hostess blinked in surprise, taken aback by Maria's frantic tone. "I'm sorry, ma'am, I haven't seen anyone matching that description come in today. Is everything alright?"
Maria felt her heart sink. "No, everything is not alright. He's missing, and I have to find him. Can you please check if he's here or if anyone has seen him?"
The hostess nodded, quickly retreating to the back as Maria paced the foyer, her wedding dress billowing around her. Moments later, the hostess returned, her face etched with sympathy.
"I'm so sorry, ma'am, but no one here has seen your fiancé. We haven't had any customers matching his description come in all day."
Maria's shoulders slumped, tears welling in her eyes. "Thank you," she whispered, turning to leave.
As she stepped out onto the sidewalk, Maria paused, her gaze darting around the bustling street. Where could Jared be? Panic began to set in, and she quickened her pace, heading for the park where he had proposed.
The familiar path felt like a cruel joke as Maria hurried through the winding trails, her wedding dress snagging on the underbrush. She scanned the benches and picnic areas, searching for any sign of Jared.
"Jared!" she called out, her voice desperate. "Jared, are you here?"
But the park was empty, save for a few joggers and dog walkers who stared at her in confusion. Defeated, Maria sank onto a nearby bench, burying her face in her hands.
"Where are you?" she whispered, her body wracked with sobs.
Time seemed to stand still as Maria wept, the reality of the situation crashing down on her. How could Jared just disappear on their wedding day? What could have possibly happened to him?
A gentle hand on her shoulder startled her, and she looked up to see a concerned park ranger.
"Ma'am, are you alright?" the ranger asked, his brow furrowed with worry. "Is there someone I can call for you?"
Maria shook her head, wiping the tears from her cheeks. "No, I...I'm looking for my fiancé. He's missing, and I don't know what to do."
The ranger's eyes widened, and he quickly radioed for backup. "Don't worry, ma'am, we'll do everything we can to help you find him. Can you tell me what he looks like and when you last saw him?"
Maria took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. "His name is Jared Summers. He's tall, with dark hair and blue eyes. I last saw him at our rehearsal dinner last night."
The ranger nodded, his expression resolute. "Alright, we'll put out an all-points bulletin and start searching the area. In the meantime, why don't you come with me to the station? You'll be safer there, and we can coordinate the search efforts."
Maria hesitated, her gaze darting back to the empty park. "But what if he comes back here? I can't just leave, I have to find him."
"I understand your concern, ma'am, but it's not safe for you to be out here alone, especially in your wedding dress," the ranger insisted. "Please, come with me. We'll do everything we can to find your fiancé, but you need to be somewhere secure."
Reluctantly, Maria nodded, allowing the ranger to guide her towards the station. As they walked, she couldn't help but feel a sense of dread. What if Jared was hurt, or worse? The thought made her stomach churn, and she quickened her pace, desperate to get to the station and coordinate the search.
Once inside, the ranger ushered her into a small office, offering her a cup of coffee. Maria accepted it gratefully, her hands trembling as she took a sip.
"Alright, ma'am, I've put out the call for all available units to join the search. We've got people combing the park and the surrounding area as we speak," the ranger said, his voice reassuring.
Maria nodded, her gaze fixed on the steaming mug in her hands. "Thank you, I...I appreciate you helping me."
The ranger smiled sympathetically. "Of course. We'll do everything we can to bring your fiancé home safe and sound. In the meantime, why don't you try calling him again? Maybe he'll answer this time."
Maria nodded, pulling her phone from the pocket of her wedding dress. Her heart raced as she dialed Jared's number, but once again, it went straight to voicemail.
"Jared, it's me," she said, her voice wavering. "Please, if you can hear this, just call me back. I'm so worried about you. I'm at the park station, and the police are looking for you. Just...just come home, okay?"
She ended the call, feeling a fresh wave of tears building in her eyes. The ranger placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, his expression filled with empathy.
"Don't worry, ma'am. We'll find him, I promise."
Maria nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. "I hope so," she whispered.
As time stretched on, Maria grew increasingly restless. She paced the small office, her wedding dress trailing behind her, occasionally stepping out to see if there was any news. The park rangers kept her updated, but each report only served to heighten her anxiety.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but we haven't been able to locate your fiancé anywhere in the park," one of the rangers said, his face etched with regret. "We've checked every corner, and there's no sign of him."
