The Twice-Crowned Heiress
Chapter 1
It was mealtime at the Byrne residence. After the housekeeper served the final dish, Elliot Byrne served Sienna Olens a chicken wing.
"This may be the final meal we will ever share as father and daughter… I didn't expect your biological parents to want you home so soon…" Elliot said longingly.
His memories brought him back to what happened three months ago when he was severely ill. At that time, Elliot was in urgent need of a blood transfusion. When Sienna donated blood to Elliot, they discovered that she wasn't Elliot's biological daughter.
It shocked everyone in the Byrne family.
After recovery, Elliot went through a lot of trouble before finding his biological child, Mya Byrne.
Everyone in the Byrne family doted on Mya after reuniting with her. After all, Sienna wasn't related to the Byrnes by blood. And so, they posted Sienna's information online.
Just yesterday, somebody called and claimed to be Sienna's biological mother, and she wanted to bring Sienna home today.
After Elliot snapped back to reality, he still felt conflicted. He said, "These are all your favorite foods. Here, eat up. We don't know, but when you go over there, you might just…"
Elliot's phone call with Sienna's biological parents revealed that they were unemployed, and they originated from Peachwood Valley, notorious for being the most impoverished city in the country!
Elliot wondered if they would even have bread on the table, let alone the delicacies that the Byrnes were enjoying!
Seemingly having seen through Elliot's thoughts, Sienna remained unfazed. She calmly put down her utensils and said, "Thank you for the meal."
Then, Sienna got up and left without hesitance; she seemed completely detached from the family.
Elliot's wife, Vivian Ashford, was displeased. She said, "She doesn't like that you didn't use the serving spoon! You must've spoiled her over the years. She'll regret not eating these delicacies now. When she goes over there, she'll suffer!"
"Don't be angry, Mom. I'm sure Sienna doesn't want to move to the countryside. She must be frustrated…" said Mya.
It had been a month since Mya was reunited with the Byrne family.
Last night, Mya eavesdropped on her parents' conversation. She found out that Sienna's biological family was very poor. Not only were Sienna's parents unemployed, but she also had five elder brothers who were unmarried, as well as a critically ill paternal grandmother.
That reflected the huge financial burden Sienna's family was under!
At that thought, Mya felt superior to Sienna. Mya said, "Let me see her off."
Meanwhile, Elliot shot Vivian a disapproving look and said, "Sienna used to be our child!"
Hearing that, Vivian scoffed. She said, "Every time I think of how Mya had to suffer while we were doting on Sienna over the years, my heart breaks…"
Sienna headed to the living room and picked up her backpack. She was ready to leave this place.
Mya caught up with Sienna and said, "Sienna, Ethan and I are getting engaged on the first of October. You're coming, right?"
Mya looked eager, but she couldn't hide her pride. It was public knowledge that the Byrnes had an arranged marriage agreement with the Gale family. If Myra hadn't reunited with the Byrnes, it would have been Sienna who would be getting engaged to Ethan Gale.
"Ethan is a great man. He treats me so well… If I hadn't reunited with Mom and Dad, it would be you who'd be getting engaged to him, Sienna! You wouldn't get angry over that, would you?"
Sienna smirked and said, "Well, I'd have to thank you for taking in that piece of trash."
Hearing that, Mya was dumbfounded.
Sienna continued, "I was about to take him to the recycling center. I wasn't expecting somebody to come pick him up so soon."
"You… You…"
Mya was about to blow up, but she caught a glimpse of Vivian from the corner of her eye. Immediately, Mya pretended to be on the verge of tears.
When Vivian walked into the scene, she became furious. She yelled, "Sienna! How can you talk to your sister like that? Watch your sharp tongue!"
"My tongue is fine. I think you should get your eyes checked, though," Sienna said, smiling.
Sienna thought Vivian must have poor eyesight to not have noticed Mya's pretentious character. After all, they had been living together for a month.
"You…" Vivian said, trembling from anger.
"Sienna, I'll give you my favorite necklace. It was a gift from Mom and Dad, but I don't know when we will ever meet again. After all, we were sisters…" Mya said.
Mya tried to cling to Sienna. But just as Mya laid her hands on Sienna's backpack, a ruby necklace fell out of Sienna's backpack. Everyone was surprised!
Shocked, Mya covered her mouth and said, "How can that be…"
Mya had wanted to give the ruby necklace to Sienna as a gift, but why did it fall out of Sienna's bag? Unless…
Seeing the turn of events, Sienna sneered. She wondered if they were trying to frame her into being a thief.
"Why do you have Mya's necklace?" Vivian asked in disbelief.
Then, Vivian yelled, "Elliot! Come and see this! Sienna stole Mya's necklace before leaving… I didn't realize we had been living with a snake for years!"
When Elliot came to the scene, he was stunned. He asked, "What is the matter?"
"It's okay, Mom, Dad…" said Mya.
Trying to be understanding, Mya continued, "I was going to give this necklace to Sienna anyway. Whether she took it by herself or if I gave it to her, it doesn't matter!"
"Why doesn't it matter? If you're giving it to her, that's a gift. But if she took it by herself, that's stealing! Sienna, you little thief! You've even stooped to stealing, huh?" Vivian barked.
"Don't say that, Mom!" said Mya.
Mya picked the ruby necklace up from the floor, and then she handed it to Sienna with a kind smile. Mya said, "Sienna, don't take Mom's words to heart. I know you must've taken this necklace for the sake of your future, am I right?
"I heard that the living conditions at your home aren't too great. This necklace might come in handy one day. You can have it!"
Seeing that, the housekeepers couldn't help but chime in.
"Ms. Mya, you're too kind! That necklace is worth 100 thousand dollars!"
"Mr and Mrs. Byrne hired a designer to specially design it for you! It's a limited edition; there is only one in this world!"
"It's engraved with your name!"
"Ms. Mya loved the necklace. I can't believe she's giving it away to Ms. Sienna…"
"It was Ms. Sienna who stole your favorite necklace, yet you didn't hold it against her…"
"Ms. Sienna was rude to you, yet you're still treating her with kindness. You're too nice, Ms. Mya!"
…
As Mya took in the compliments, she said, "Sienna will need it more than I do!"
Hearing that, everyone praised Mya, and they couldn't help but compare the sisters. The more they compared the two, the more they thought that Sienna couldn't compare up to Mya!
Aside from her beauty, nothing about Sienna could compare to Mya!
Vivian snatched the necklace from Mya and said lovingly, "You silly girl. That family is like a black hole. Even if you give her ten necklaces, it won't ever be enough!"
Chapter 2
Vivian shot Sienna a dirty look and said, "We did our best raising you over the years. This necklace is a gift to Mya, so you can forget about it! Now, get lost before I call the cops!"
Hearing Vivian's words, Mya said, "Mom! Sienna's biological parents are unemployed. She also has five unmarried elder brothers and a sickly grandmother to take care of… Sienna can sell this necklace for money. She needs it more than I do…"
The housekeepers were touched by Mya's kindness. They all thought that Mya was very mature and good-hearted.
"Mom, since you've given the necklace to me, I can decide what I want to do with it!" said Mya as she snatched the necklace out of Vivian's hand.
Then, Mya turned to Sienna and said eagerly, "Take it, Sienna. I won't blame you for stealing. I was going to give it to you anyway…"
Sienna gazed at Mya with interest. Noticing how Mya emphasized theft again, Sienna wondered if Mya had other tricks up her sleeves. After all, Mya had been using the same tricks repeatedly.
"Sienna, I'll hold Mom back… You can go!"
Sienna smirked in response. It was as if she had seen through Mya.
Noticing Sienna's smirk, Mya felt a little intimidated. She thought Sienna seemed very nonchalant, yet Sienna also seemed like she had everything in the palm of her hand.
Mya was restless and guilty.
When Sienna accepted the necklace, her lips curled slightly. The low-grade ruby wasn't to her taste at all. Judging from its color, clarity, and cut, Sienna thought it must've been crafted by a small-time workshop.
In Sienna's eyes, it wasn't worth 100 thousand dollars; it was worthless.
Just when everyone assumed Sienna would leave with the necklace, Sienna threw it into the trash can without hesitation.
Everyone was shocked.
After a long pause, Vivian snarled, "What are you doing, Sienna? That's your sister's favorite necklace! She kindly gave it to you, how can you throw it away?"
"Since she gave it to me, I can do what I want with it. I didn't take a single thing that you all bought me over the years," Sienna said plainly.
It was just a necklace; Sienna didn't care for it.
Sienna continued, "I'm only wearing and taking with me items that I bought with my own money."
One of the housekeepers couldn't help but scoff at Sienna. She asked, "Your money? Wasn't that given to you by Mr. and Mrs. Byrne?"
"Must I report to you where I got my money from?"
"You…"
"You just have to do your job as a housekeeper."
The housekeeper was furious, but she couldn't refute Sienna.
Elliot sighed. Trying to make peace, he stepped in and said, "That's enough. Sienna, it's almost time. Let me see you out."
"It's fine. You don't have to see me off, Mr. Byrne."
Sienna was trying to set her boundaries with Elliot by calling him "Mr. Byrne".
Vivian let out a scornful huff. She thought, "This brat has never been to the countryside. She has no idea how tough life will be there! She's quick to set boundaries now; she'd better not come back crying to us, trying to reclaim us as her parents!"
"Mr. Byrne, can you check her bags? It seems like she's carrying a lot of things…" the housekeeper reminded Elliot again.
"That's enough!"
After all, Elliot was the richest man in Snowvale. Even if Sienna had stolen anything, Elliot wouldn't discuss it publicly. He wouldn't embarrass himself by searching Sienna's bags!
And so, Sienna left with her backpack. Outside, a black car was waiting.
But what stood out was the signs of collision that the car had—its rear hood was raised, the body was dented, and the windshield had cracks in it…
The chauffeur stumbled out of the car. His glasses were tilted; they were damaged. But when the chauffeur saw Sienna, he paused.
The young woman had beautiful features. Her beauty was akin to how Mrs. Olens looked when she was younger! But the young woman was more confident than Mrs. Olens, which made her even more alluring.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Olens. I was rear-ended by a truck and crashed into the railings. In case of wasting your precious time, I chose to not change to a different car… But I've inspected the car; it's perfectly fine, it just looks a little wrecked…" the chauffeur hurriedly said to Sienna, apologizing sincerely.
However, his explanation provided a large amount of information.
Rumor had it that her home was in an impoverished valley. Sienna was surprised that her family had a car.
If she wasn't mistaken, the car was a Rolls-Royce Bespoke Custom Edition. There was only one in the world, and it was worth up to billions.
Sienna smirked and asked, "Ms. Olens?"
"Yes, Ms. Olens! You're the sixth child, and you have five older brothers!"
Suddenly, the chauffeur remembered that he hadn't introduced himself. He said, "I forgot to introduce myself. I'm the family chauffeur, Lawrence Lane. You can call me Lawrence."
Seeing how her biological family had a chauffeur, Sienna thought her biological family probably wasn't as poor as the Byrnes had described them to be.
Noticing that Sienna only had a backpack, Lawrence asked, "Where are your belongings, Ms. Olens? Is it inside? I can carry it for you."
"That's fine. This is all of my luggage," Sienna said casually.
She didn't have much to bring with her, after all.
Hearing her words, Lawrence nodded. He said, "Please wait in the car, then. I will deliver the gifts Mr. and Mrs. Olens prepared for your adoptive parents. We may depart after I convey their gratitude to your adoptive parents."
Lawrence opened the rear door, wanting to invite Sienna to get into the car. But to his surprise, the door fell off! The collision with the truck was too severe; the door was damaged…
When the Byrnes walked out, they witnessed the door falling off.
Mya was surprised!
"What trashy car is that? Is it made out of paper? Aren't they embarrassed to drive that car around? Her family must be very poor. I can't believe they need a car like that to save face…" Mya thought.
Vivian hadn't expected the state of Sienna's biological family either. She wondered how they dared to drive such a damaged car around town without feeling embarrassed.
"Wait, her family's living in an impoverished valley. They probably don't have cars! This man must've borrowed a friend's car to make himself look good. Unfortunately, he was a bad driver and he crashed the car!" Vivian thought.
At that thought, Vivian became curious about how things would turn out. She thought they must pay a hefty bill when they returned the car to its owner!
Elliot examined Lawrence's filthy appearance, and Elliot noticed the oil stains on Lawrence's suit.
"Is he a mechanic? Judging by his age, he probably isn't Sienna's brother; could he be Sienna's father? He must've rushed from the workshop. Did he drive someone else's car to look good? If that's the case, he must be a very materialistic man… " Elliot thought.
Elliot also thought that they did not need to pretend to be wealthy before him, the richest man in Snowvale.
Even though the car had the Rolls-Royce emblem on its bonnet, Elliot thought that the car didn't seem like any of the existing Rolls-Royce models. He had never seen a Rolls-Royce like this in his life!
Elliot was confident that the Rolls-Royce emblem was fake.
Chapter 3
Lawrence had accidentally stained his suit when he inspected the car earlier. When he saw the Byrnes, he hurriedly took the gift boxes from the trunk. Sienna's parents had reminded Lawrence to deliver the gifts to the Byrne family.
But the collision with the truck damaged the gift boxes, and they look less presentable.
"You must be Mr. Byrne! This is a token of appreciation from us, please accept it…" Lawrence said politely to Elliot.
"There's no need. Please! Over the years, we…"
Vivian interrupted and said, "You don't have to give us gifts! Please bring her home as soon as possible. Her family must be waiting!"
Losing interest, Vivian turned around and went inside. When Vivian saw how damaged the gift boxes were, she believed that the gifts wouldn't be of high value. She thought that they didn't need their gifts!
Mya tried to control herself from sneering. She followed behind Vivian and returned home triumphantly. She was delighted at how poor Sienna's biological family turned out to be!
The housekeepers looked on in disdain and sympathy. Then, they went inside too.
Elliot was left outside awkwardly. He said, "I wish you all the best. As for the gifts… Consider it my gift to the elderly in Sienna's family."
"But…" Lawrence said hesitantly.
Lawrence couldn't decide on behalf of Sienna's parents. After all, they especially instructed him to deliver it to the Byrnes…
"Sienna. When you're there, be good. Respect your parents… Don't think about us. Prioritize your family there, do you hear me?" Elliot said to Sienna.
But what he meant was for Sienna to stop thinking about the Byrne family. After reuniting with the Olens family, Sienna would eternally be an Olens.
"Please accept this, Mr. Byrne! Mr. Byrne!"
Lawrence was about to tell Elliot about the property deeds and keys to 30 villas and 30 storefronts, as well as the three-billion-dollar bank card and rare herbs that couldn't be found on the market. They were all gifts from Sienna's parents.
But Lawrence couldn't speak up in time. As he watched Elliot walk away into the house, he thought, "Why does it feel like they aren't very fond of Ms. Olens?"
Lawrence wondered if his intuition was wrong.
Meanwhile, Sienna picked up the car door and casually reinstalled it to the frame. She said, "Let's go."
Seeing how Sienna had gotten into the car, Lawrence was shocked. He wondered how Sienna managed to reinstall the door.
Sienna idly stared out the window. Her beautiful face was a delight for anyone to see. The longer Lawrence continued to observe Sienna through the rearview mirror, the more he thought Sienna was identical to Mrs. Olens.
Every part of Sienna seemed so graceful.
"Aren't we going to Peachwood Valley?" Sienna asked suddenly, shifting her gaze to Lawrence.
"Peachwood Valley? Oh, that's Mr. and Mrs. Olens' hometown, but your home is in Regalton," Lawrence answered, snapping back to reality.
Regalton was known to be the most developed country in the entire country of Solviera. It was sectioned into four counties—Eastward County, Westhaven County, Southridge County, and Northgate County. Among them, Northgate County was the poorest county.
Northgate County was also segregated into Clearcrest Town, Mossgrove Town, Harborfield Town, and Shorefield Town. Among them, Shorefield Town was the least developed.
Meanwhile, Shorefield Town was sectioned into four districts—Greenvale, Sunnyvale, Maplevale, and Snowvale.
Elliot was the richest man in Snowvale.
Elliot worked all his life and finally, moved from a less developed city to Regalton at the beginning of the year. He settled in the least developed district, in the most undeveloped town of the poorest county, Snowvale.
There in the small district of Snowvale, Elliot was the richest man. Many other people in the country were richer than him, but he was better off than many others, too.
Elliot's net worth exceeded one billion dollars, and that was the reason why Vivian became so prideful.
After Mya went inside, she casually glanced outside, but she couldn't believe what she saw. Shocked, Mya said, "Mom… Their car…"
"What's wrong?" Vivian asked, following Mya's gaze.
Then, Vivian said dismissively, "Listen up, Mya. You are no longer related to Sienna from today onward! She is no longer your sister. Block her number, and if she tries to borrow money from you, don't give her any money. Do you hear me?"
"No, Mom. Their vehicle license plate is from Regalton. I think it's RGT-66666…"
License plates like those symbolized status!
Since the car was parked in front of the villa, Vivian couldn't see the vehicle's license plate. But when Vivian heard Mya's words, Vivian chuckled.
Vivian thought Mya was too naive.
"Mya, only people at the top 1% of Regalton can have license plates with a string of identical numbers. Sienna's family is in Peachwood Valley; you must've seen something else!"
Even the Byrne family didn't have a luxurious license plate. Vivian thought Sienna's family couldn't have such a luxurious license plate!
"Unless her family lives in Edenlake Residences, of course!" Vivian said, sneering.
Edenlake Residences was the most renowned, luxurious, and strategically located luxury residential area. Nestled in the heart of Regalton, it was in the most prime location in the entire city!
…
Lawrence said respectfully, "Ms. Olens, we are about 13 miles away from where your home is in Edenlake Residences. If you are tired, you may take a short nap."
Sienna was surprised to hear that her family home was located in Edenlake Residences, the most luxurious residential area in Regalton.
"Can we drop by Regalton City Hospital?"
Regalton City Hospital was a local hospital that had the best medical resources. It wasn't too far from Edenlake Residences.
Lawrence asked anxiously, "Are you unwell, Ms. Olens? I'll speed it up…"
"I want to visit Mrs. Byrne Senior before I leave."
When Sienna lived with the Byrnes, only Margaret Caldwell, Elliot's mother, treated Sienna with sincerity. But ever since Margaret discovered that Sienna wasn't Elliot's child, she fell incredibly ill.
Lawrence hadn't expected that of Sienna; it gave him a positive impression of Sienna. Lawrence agreed to Sienna's request.
Ten minutes later, they arrived at Regalton City Hospital. Sienna got out of the car and said gently, "Please wait for me, Lawrence."
"Sure."
Meanwhile, in room 301, an elderly woman lay in bed. She was suffering from her illness, and she looked thin and frail.
When Sienna entered the room, Margaret was still unconscious. Her eyes were tightly shut, and her face was pale. The wrinkles on Margaret's forehead made her seem haggard.
As Sienna approached the bed, she felt sorry for Margaret. Sienna wondered what had happened to the energetic old lady that she used to know.
As he wrote away on Margaret's medical records, the young doctor glanced at Sienna and said, "Sienna, you're just in time. Let's talk."
The doctor put away his pen and gazed directly at Sienna.
"As you may already know, none of the medications are working on Mrs. Byrne Senior. In the past, it worked when we increased the dosage, but even that doesn't work anymore.
"You know far better than anyone that having a stage 4 heart failure meant that her heart is at its end. It's not reversible. It's a miracle that she's still alive now…"
Chapter 4
Margaret's doctor, Tyler Yates, was telling Sienna about how the medication wasn't working anymore. But before he could finish, Sienna tossed him a small bottle without shifting her gaze away from Margaret.
"Is this a Heartwell Pill? Sienna, where did you get this?" Tyler said in shock when he saw what was in the bottle.
The Heartwell Pill was a miracle drug that had been making waves in the black market. It carried amazing healing properties for the heart, and a single pill would cost over ten million dollars…
Beyond its price, rarity was its catch—only one pill was auctioned monthly!
Tyler was puzzled as to how Sienna got her hands on such a rare drug.
"Look at how the Byrnes are treating you. I think you've done enough for the Byrne family, you don't have to…"
But before Tyler could finish, Sienna shot him a warning glare.
Tyler continued, "What? Am I wrong? Even her son isn't doing as much as you are…"
Six months ago, Tyler graduated from the top medical school in the country, and he joined Regalton City Hospital as a resident doctor.
Hailing from a family of doctors, Tyler was prideful and arrogant. But when he encountered Sienna, he finally realized there would always be someone better than him.
Once, Tyler was tackling a tricky case, and he had many sleepless nights. But when Sienna took a look at it, she quickly provided him with a good treatment plan.
On another occasion, Sienna happened to glance at a patient's chest X-ray and CT scan results before concluding that the patient had lung cancer. Meanwhile, Tyler's initial diagnosis was acute pneumonia.
There were countless incidents like these, but what earned Tyler's respect was Margaret's case.
Margaret was at death's door; Tyler had given her a terminal prognosis. Yet, Sienna sustained Margaret's life again and again!
To Tyler, Sienna was a scary high schooler who brought him unending surprises. She broke down his arrogance and highlighted his ignorance. She left Tyler with no choice but to learn to be humble!
Over the past six months of Tyler's residency, he also witnessed how the Byrne family treated Sienna poorly. Over time, he became friends with Sienna.
Tyler knew well that what Margaret needed most was a heart transplant.
However, her old age, high blood pressure, and heart failure were reasons that prevented her from getting surgery. As such, Sienna gave Margaret the Heartwell Pill in hopes that it would improve Margaret's situation, sustaining her life before going into the surgery room.
But the Byrne family had no idea about all that. They thought that all they had to do was to pay Margaret's medical bills in the VIP ward…
"If it were the Byrnes, they wouldn't even pay 100 thousand dollars for this thing."
"That's enough. Take care of Grandma on my behalf. I have to go," said Sienna with a longing sigh.
Sienna couldn't stay for long. If Margaret saw Sienna after waking up, Margaret would only become even more worked up, worsening her condition. That would complicate the situation.
Tyler said gently, "I'll take care of it. Don't worry."
Sienna hummed in acknowledgment. She gazed at Margaret; she had a lot to say, but she left room 301 without a word.
Meanwhile, several doctors were hurrying down the hallway.
"What's wrong? Why would Mr. Stonehart Senior's condition worsen suddenly?"
"He refused to take his pills so that Mr. Stonehart would show up…"
"Nonsense!"
Just after exiting room 301, Sienna bumped into one of the doctors. She saw that the doctors rushed into room 306. When Sienna passed by the room, she saw that the old man on the hospital bed was almost at death's door.
"How can he stop taking his medication? He's risking his life!"
"What do we do now? Have you notified his family?"
"His family is on their way. We have to wait until they arrive before deciding if we carry on with the surgery…"
Standing by the door to room 306, Sienna said nonchalantly, "By the time his family arrives, he'll be dead."
When the doctors heard her, they turned around. There, a beautiful teenage girl stood by the door, and she had a cold aura around her. She had a pair of bright eyes, and she had slender legs that accentuated her physical appeal.
"What do you know, little girl? This gentleman's condition is very complicated. If we had the solution, we would definitely try to save him as soon as possible," said the male doctor.
Seeing how Sienna was just a child, the doctor decided to not argue with her. Given the circumstances, they didn't have any choice aside from waiting for the patient's family to arrive.
Hearing his words, Sienna raised her brows confusedly. She asked, "Is rheumatic heart disease a serious condition?"
"You can tell?" the male doctor asked in surprise.
Another elderly female doctor was surprised too. She asked, "Have you studied medicine, child?"
"Since you know that he is suffering from rheumatic heart disease, you would also know that it requires a heart valve replacement surgery. But it's not the first time that this gentleman has received a heart valve replacement surgery!" said the male doctor, explaining the patient's situation.
Yet, Sienna replied casually, "If he needs another heart valve replacement surgery, that just means you didn't administer the full course of antibiotics. That is why he has an infection and a paravalvular leak."
Hearing her words, all the doctors in the room were stunned.
"She actually knows medicine, huh?"
"She even knows what a paravalvular leak is…"
The truth was that the patient was having infections and a paravalvular leak because he stopped taking his medication without permission, not completing his entire course of antibiotics.
…
"Why are you wasting your time talking with a child? When is the patient's family arriving?" another older doctor, Zeke Whitmore said.
Zeke was in his 50s, and he was the most experienced cardiovascular specialist in Regalton City Hospital.
The other doctors respected him. One of them said, "Dr. Whitmore, judging from their track record, the earliest they can arrive is in 20 minutes."
Zeke thought 20 minutes was too long; Dominic Stonehart wouldn't be able to wait that long.
Dominic once received a mitral valve replacement surgery abroad. But soon after, he experienced a paravalvular leak. Because of that, he went abroad for another aortic valve replacement surgery.
Yet, soon after that surgery, Dominic had an infection and a paravalvular leak relapse. His condition was critical, and it was too late to send him abroad. Left with no choice, he had to receive treatment in the country.
Regalton City Hospital's cardiology department was renowned nationwide. On top of that, Zeke was known as a skilled doctor, too.
That very night, Zeke endured the pressure from various parties and completed a seemingly impossible surgery. He performed a miracle! But not long after, Dominic had an infection again, and he needed another surgery.
Now, Dominic's condition had worsened further. He had an upper respiratory tract infection, which eventually evolved into pneumonia. After the doctors kept the pneumonia under control, Dominic had signs of heart failure again…
After inspecting Dominic, Zeke found that Dominic had prosthetic valve endocarditis and a paravalvular leak. Dominic was in a critical state.
If they performed surgery on Dominic now, the success rate would be no more than 10%!
All that was left was to wait for Dominic's family to arrive.
Chapter 5
To the doctors, once Dominic's family signed the consent form, they could try to save Dominic without hesitation. Even if Dominic died in the process, the hospital and doctors wouldn't be held responsible.
But judging from Dominic's current state, he wouldn't be able to wait any longer. If the doctors continued to stand idly, Dominic would die in ten minutes.
A younger senior attending physician, Stella Quince said carefully, "Dr. Whitmore, let's wait for the family to arrive, shall we? If we did the surgery without permission…"
If anything had gone wrong, Maximus Stonehart wouldn't let them get away with it!
Stella thought that the situation was beyond their control, and today was Dominic's death day.
"I think we should give him an injection of magnesium sulfate and dipyridamole. We should sustain him until his family arrives!" Stella said, continuing to suggest.
Without any better ideas, the other doctors remained silent. They all gazed at Zeke and waited for his decision.
Seeing that Zeke was hesitant, Stella decided to be the bad cop. She turned to the nurse and said, "Bring a dose of magnesium sulfate and dipyridamole."
Just as the nurse was about to leave, Sienna chimed in casually, "If you inject him now, he will die for sure."
If they injected Dominic with magnesium sulfate and dipyridamole, nobody could save him. Given Dominic's current state, his body wouldn't be able to take on any more drugs.
The injections would only give him moments of consciousness, but he would be guaranteed to die in 30 minutes.
"Where is this little girl from? Shoo! The adults are busy, we don't have time to chat with you."
Since just now, Stella had been annoyed by Sienna who appeared out of nowhere. Stella didn't like how Sienna interrupted when all the specialists were trying to come up with a solution.
"What a quack," Sienna said.
Not wanting to waste more time, Sienna turned around to leave. But Stella, unable to swallow that remark, barked, "Who are you referring to? Stand right there!"
"Stella, don't argue with that child. Mr. Stonehart Senior's case is more urgent," said Martin Lloyd, the male doctor.
"But she called me a quack!"
Furious, Stella glared at Sienna. After all, Stella was the most reputable doctor among all the doctors in the room. Stella was the youngest senior attending physician; she received numerous awards and recognitions.
Stella couldn't believe that Sienna was questioning her expertise!
"She doesn't know anything. Why are you trying to argue with her?" Martin asked.
Wanting to quickly settle Dominic's case, the male doctor was anxious. Regardless, they mustn't allow Dominic to pass away in the hospital. Otherwise, everyone would be implicated.
Since they could not perform surgery on Dominic nor leave Dominic to die, their only choice was to inject magnesium sulfate and dipyridamole.
"Who did you call a quack? Go on, I'm listening," said Stella, walking up to Sienna.
"You, of course. Who else?" Sienna said nonchalantly.
"You little…"
Stella was furious at how rude Sienna was.
With her arms crossed, Sienna said, "Given his current state, his only choice is surgery."
"Surgery? It's easy for a kid like you to say that," Stella said, sneering.
She continued, "This gentleman has received five heart surgeries. Not a part of his heart is complete! No hospital in this country would dare to perform the sixth heart surgery on him, let alone Regalton City Hospital!"
"Drop it, Stella," said Martin, trying to make peace.
But evidently, Stella's temper could not be easily pacified.
Stella continued and said, "Regardless of international or domestic journals, no other case similar to Mr. Stonehart Senior's condition has ever been recorded! He is the first case in the history of mankind!
"Do you know how difficult the surgery would be? We've discussed with various heart specialists in and out of the country, but nobody can come up with a better idea!"
Hearing that, Stella raised her brow and said, "That's because you're all incapable."
"And you're capable? Why don't you do it, then?" Stella said, letting out a scornful huff.
Sienna glanced at the old man on the hospital bed. Then, she said, "You can't afford to hire me."
In response, Stella sneered. She said, "This gentleman isn't any regular person. Any amount of money would mean nothing but numbers to him. If you can rescue him, I can kneel to you. Money wouldn't even be a problem!"
Sienna said, "Fine, then."
But Stella didn't take Sienna seriously.
Stella barked, "You think too highly of yourself! Have you graduated high school? Do you know where the heart is? Surgery isn't about making a few cuts on the body. Do you think it's like eating steak? You can't do whatever you want!
"I don't care where you're from, but if you apologize and leave, I can pretend nothing ever happened!"
Sienna glanced at Stella's name tag and said nonchalantly, "You're the senior attending physician of the cardiology department, but you don't even know how to perform an artificial valve replacement surgery. How dare you ask for an apology?"
"You little…"
"Calling you a quack is already a sign of respect."
"Are you all hearing what she's saying?" Stella said angrily.
Meanwhile, the other female doctor, Lillian Lautner mumbled under her breath and said, "She knows what an artificial valve replacement surgery is…"
Lillian was surprised by how an average girl like Sienna could name such difficult medical jargon. She wondered if Sienna had studied medicine.
With the same thought, Martin stared at Sienna in shock. He whispered to Stella, "Why don't we let her try? What if she has a solution?"
"Dr. Lloyd, you must be out of your mind! Why are you listening to this teenager?"
Before Stella could finish, another doctor whispered, "But if anything goes wrong, we can blame it on her…"
Stella refuted, "She's not a doctor! Do you know who Mr. Stonehart is? If anything goes wrong, we're all responsible! Do you think a mere teenager can take the blame for us all?"
Then, Stella turned around and glanced at Sienna disdainfully. Stella said, "If she really studied medicine, she would have made herself known. She will be the attending physician today! Why would the hospital need us?"
Martin said, "But we don't have a better option now…"
"Why don't we get Dr. Yates' help?" said Lillian.
Tyler was a renowned genius in the hospital, but…
"Dr. Yates is very prideful. He won't treat a patient that hasn't been assigned to him," said Stella.
That was the reason why Stella never troubled Tyler with Dominic's case. After all, Tyler had a bad temper, and he would likely kick her out of his office mercilessly.
"What do we do, then?"
…
Perhaps it was due to all the noise, but several people had gathered outside the room. They were discussing the commotion.
